Gynecologic Cancer Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is my prognosis based on the type and stage of my gynecologic cancer?

It’s normal for someone with cancer to ask, “Will this treatment cure my cancer?” The truth is it varies from person to person and by type of cancer. Some gynecologic cancers are easily identified at an early stage when they’re easier to treat. The Pap screening test for cervical cancer makes it possible to find cervical cancer at a very early stage resulting in most patients recovering fully.

Other types of gynecologic cancer are not as easily identified until symptoms appear which means the cancer has grown and will require more treatments to effectively remove all of it. Cancers that are more advanced at the time of diagnosis have a higher likelihood of recurrence.

If you were recently diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer, talk to one of our oncologists about the most common outcomes for your type and stage of cancer.

  • Can I choose where I receive treatment and who performs my surgery?

Most patients can choose where they receive gynecologic cancer treatment and which specialist to see. If your cancer was diagnosed by a primary care physician (PCP) or gynecologist, the next step is typically surgery followed by other cancer treatments if necessary. A gynecologic oncologist can perform your surgery and oversee medical oncology treatments that may be needed afterward.

At Affiliated Oncologists, our board-certified gynecologic oncology surgeons specialize in minimally invasive procedures such as hysterectomy, oophorectomy to remove the ovaries, and tumor debulking using the daVinci robot-assisted surgical procedures.

They are also board-certified in medical oncology and will be the primary physician overseeing systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy. They work closely with the radiation oncologists if radiation therapy is included in the treatment plan.

  • What type of surgery will I need?

The recommended surgical approach for your gynecologic cancer often depends on the type, location, and stage of your cancer. Treatment for endometrial (uterine) cancer, ovarian cancer, or cervical cancer typically includes a surgical procedure to remove the tumor. A hysterectomy is often recommended, especially if you’re in menopause, to remove the uterus and potentially the ovaries. The Affiliated Oncologists gynecologic oncologists will discuss the right procedure for you and what’s involved. Whenever possible, they use minimally invasive surgical techniques, including DaVinci Robot Surgery, giving the surgeon a wider range of motion and better visualization to access hard-to-reach areas around the female reproductive organs and surrounding structures such as the liver, spleen, and intestines.

  • Will I need other treatments in addition to surgery?

Some patients benefit from additional therapies to help eliminate cancer cells that may be left after surgery. This reduces the risk of cancer recurrence. Depending on your diagnosis and stage of cancer, treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.

The Affiliated Oncologists gynecologic cancer care team will design a personalized treatment plan based on your specific cancer type, stage, and overall health. They will oversee your medical oncology treatments and work closely with our radiation oncologists if radiation therapy is included in your treatment plan.

  • How much will treatment cost me out of pocket?

Insurance coverage and personal costs vary by plan. The financial counselors at Affiliated Oncologists will review your benefits, explain expected coverage, and help you understand potential out-of-pocket expenses before treatment begins.

Choosing to receive treatment at an independent cancer center like Affiliated Oncologists can be more cost-effective compared to care in a hospital outpatient setting. A recent study conducted by the Community Oncology Alliance found that patients could pay up to 50% more when treated at a hospital-affiliated outpatient department than at an independent oncology practice.

Our team is dedicated to helping patients access high-quality cancer care that includes the latest technologies and personalized treatment plans at an affordable price.

  • How might treatment affect my sexual health, intimacy, or fertility?

Gynecologic cancer treatment can affect hormone levels, energy levels, and physical comfort. Some patients experience discomfort, vaginal dryness, and fatigue that may impact intimacy. These effects often improve over time, and supportive treatments are available. Still, talking openly with your partner about your concerns can help ease worries and strengthen emotional intimacy and trust during this time.

If you are pre-menopausal when diagnosed with gynecologic cancer and hope to have children in the future, fertility preservation options, such as freezing or protecting your eggs, embryos, or reproductive tissue, may be available. Discuss your goals with your oncologist and a fertility specialist before starting cancer treatment.

  • Should I consider a gynecologic cancer clinical trial?

Clinical trials make it possible for our patients in the South Chicago area to access the latest therapies for their type of gynecologic cancer, often before they’re widely available. If your oncology team discusses participation in a trial, it means you’re qualified to access this emerging therapy. Participation is optional. Feel free to ask questions about how a trial is different from the other treatment options available and how you might benefit from participating.

  • How likely is my gynecologic cancer to return after treatment?

The risk of recurrence depends on factors such as cancer type, stage at diagnosis, genetic mutations, such as the BRCA1/2 genes, and how your body responds to cancer treatment. Earlier detection and treatment are generally associated with a lower risk of recurrence.

Follow-up care is important for monitoring your health after treatment. Be sure to attend regular visits with your care team to watch for any changes that may need prompt attention. Healthy lifestyle choices, including managing stress, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, avoiding tobacco products, and reducing alcohol consumption, may also support overall wellness.
