Gynecologic Cancer Care in South Chicago Suburbs

Gynecologic cancers are cancers that begin in the reproductive organs of women. These cancers include cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial (uterine) cancers, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer.

Each of these cancers is unique, with varying causes and treatment options. What they do have in common, however, is that they are all treated by a gynecologic oncologist who specializes in these types of cancer in women. The specialists of the Gynecologic Cancer Institute of Chicago are now a division of Affiliated Oncologists, making it possible to provide the most advanced treatments for female reproductive cancers, including highly advanced, robot-assisted surgery.

Less Common Gynecologic Cancer Types

Vaginal Cancer

Vaginal cancer develops when cancerous (malignant) cells form in the vagina. Most vaginal cancers are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV).

Vulvar Cancer

Vulvar cancer occurs most often on the vaginal lips or the sides of the vaginal opening. About half of all vulvar cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD)

GTD is a rare form of gynecologic cancer that causes tumors to form in the tissues of the uterus that surround an egg (the placenta) after it is fertilized. These types of tumors can be non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).

What to Expect if You Were Diagnosed With a Gynecologic Cancer

If you have been diagnosed with gynecologic cancer, the first step is to schedule a consultation with a gynecologic oncologist. This type of doctor specializes in treating cancers that develop in the female reproductive system. If you are located in the south Chicago area, Affiliated Oncologists offers gynecologic oncology appointments in the South Chicago suburbs.

This first appointment with an oncologist aims to assess your type of gynecologic cancer and create an individualized treatment plan for you. Before your appointment, our cancer care team will review the medical records to understand your needs. Meeting with one of our gynecologic oncologists can help you learn more about your specific type of cancer and the treatment options available. If surgery has not yet been performed, the gynecologic oncologist can discuss what may be needed. In most cases, the oncologist will also be the surgeon.
